Go Beyond
Great Coffee.
We believe great coffee starts with the people
who grow it, and ends with the person holding the cup.
Eclipse is a specialty roastery rooted in Canmore, Alberta. Roasting weekly since 2014.
Our story
Where we came from.
Eclipse was born from a deep connection to European coffee culture. Eclipse's founder Dean came to Canmore with a clear vision: bring the craft-focused, espresso-forward approach he grew up with to the Bow Valley.
The name was chosen deliberately. An eclipse doesn't just block the light — it surpasses it. Go beyond. Keep improving. That ethos has driven every decision since 2014.

We're always looking for ways to reduce our footprint, from how we power the roastery, the packaging we use, and how we manage waste in the cafe.

How we source
From farm cooperatives
to trusted importers.
We source our coffees through a combination of direct trade relationships and carefully vetted specialty importers — choosing the path that gets us closest to the people growing the coffee.
Some of our coffees, like the Siane Chimbu from Papua New Guinea, come directly from producer cooperatives like SOAC, who trade directly into international markets on behalf of their farmers. Others come through importers with deep, longstanding farm relationships in regions like Brazil and Colombia.
Either way, the standard is the same: every coffee is selected from cupped samples, and we only carry lots we can stand behind for quality, traceability, and how the people growing them are treated.
The craft
Precision roasting,
every batch.
Our drum roaster monitors every variable in real time, replicating distinct profiles for each coffee with complete consistency, every single week.
Bright
Bright
Fruit-forward single origins. Best as a pour over.
Balanced
Balanced
Sweet and approachable. The middle ground.
Bold
Bold
Rich and traditional. Built for espresso.

Meet the founder
Dean
Smolicz
"A cappuccino every morning. It's the clearest daily test of whether the roasting and the bar are both performing well."
Dean, Founder
What brought you to Canmore with this vision?
I grew up in the UK and the developing specialty coffee culture there shaped how I thought about coffee. When I settled in Canmore I wanted to replicate that European craft approach and build something that could genuinely go beyond what already existed.
How should someone new to specialty coffee find their feet?
Start with our categories — Bright, Balanced, Bold — rather than roast labels. If you're used to darker coffees, try a coffee in our Bold catergory first and progress into the Balanced. Your palate will develop through exposure. Everyone enjoys different things about coffee and we're always happy to guide you in the café.
What's your favourite way to drink coffee?
A cappuccino every morning without fail. It's a quality control habit as much as anything else. But if I'm really enjoying a cup for its own sake, it's a lighter, fruity pour over. That's where the complexity of a great single origin really comes through.
