You know that moment when you taste a coffee and it genuinely surprises you? Not in a "hm, that's interesting" way, but more of a "put-your-cup-down-and-think-about-it" way.
That's the Gahahe Burundi.
We've been roasting specialty coffee in Canmore since 2014 and African origins have always held a special place for us. There's something about the clarity and directness of a well-grown, East African coffee, processed with the highest care, that reminds you why you fell in love with coffee in the first place. The Gahahe is one of those coffees. Here's why.
Where Burundi Fits in the World of Specialty Coffee
Burundi doesn't always get the recognition it deserves in the specialty coffee world. Ethiopia gets the headlines. Kenya gets the accolades. But Burundi quietly keeps producing some of the most exciting cups on the planet and waiting for the rest of the world to catch on.
Tucked into the heart of East Africa, landlocked and mountainous, Burundi's high altitude plateau — sitting between 1,500 and 2,000 metres above sea level — creates the kind of growing conditions that specialty coffee people dream about. Volcanic soil. Equatorial climate. Slow cherry development. The kind of landscape that turns a coffee seed into an exciting story.
The quality of Burundi coffee has risen significantly over the last several years, driven by better processing infrastructure and growing recognition at competitions like the Cup of Excellence.
The Gahahe Washing Station — A Mark of Collective Craft
Here's something that surprises a lot of people about Burundi coffee — the farms are small, and it often takes multiple farmers' deliveries to create a single lot. Which is why coffees here are named after the washing station, rather than a single farm or producer.
But the Gahahe name isn't just one person's story. It's the story of around 1,740 smallholder farmers, each owning less than half a hectare of land, delivering their hand-picked cherries to a central station where the real magic of processing happens. Alongside their coffee trees these farmers also grow bananas, beans, yams, and cassava — a diverse way of farming that has sustained their communities for generations. For farmers in this region, coffee is part of life, not just a crop.
Greenco
The washing station is managed by Greenco — a company that has dominated the Burundi Cup of Excellence since 2015, and genuinely cares about more than just cup scores. They work with young agronomy graduates year-round, support farmers between harvests, and address community challenges like youth unemployment head-on. Solar panels. Water treatment. Real salaries. The kind of operation that makes you feel good about where your coffee comes from.

How Burundi Coffee is Processed at the Gahahe Washing Station
The Gahahe Burundi we carry is naturally processed.
In a natural process the whole cherry is dried intact, seed inside, over several weeks on raised drying tables. As it dries, the sugars from the fruit slowly work their way into the bean. The result is a coffee with real fruit character — not added, not artificial, just the cherry doing its thing over time.
Quality control at Gahahe is meticulous. Every cherry is floated to check density, sorted by hand, laid in thin layers on drying tables, turned regularly, and covered overnight. From there the dried coffee travels to Burundi's largest dry mill where it's hand-sorted bean by bean for defects — a process that takes a team of two pickers an entire day per bag.

Best enjoyed black as a pour over or AeroPress. Nothing in the way. Just the coffee. ☕
Why We're Excited About This One
The Gahahe ticks every box for us. An origin doing exciting things, a washing station with real values behind it, a processing method that brings out the best of what the cherry has to offer, and a cup that offers a pleasant surprise at the first sip.
If you've never tried a Burundi before, this is a great place to start. And if you have, our Gahahe Burundimight just become a new favourite.
