Idedo is a town located in Yirgacheffe Woreda, 10 Km Northeast of the city of Yirgacheffe. Yirgacheffe woreda is one of eight woredas found in the Gedeo Zone. Every coffee produced in the Gedeo Zone is a Yirgacheffe Type coffee. Unlike Sidama coffee, Guji Coffee, Harari coffee where the coffees are named after the ethnic group residing within the area, Yirgacheffe coffee isn't named after the Gedeo people who live in the area. It's named after Yirgacheffe city, the second largest city in the Gedeo Zone.

Idedo and the surrounding highlands are known for producing the finest quality Yirgacheffe type coffee. This is due to its high altitude and relatively cooler temperature. Typically, Naturals from Idedo have berry like and winey flavor and bright acidity. Cherries are manually harvested, density sorted, hand sorted for even ripeness, and slowly dried on raised (African) beds under the sun for six hours per day for 14-16 days.

Ethiopia Small Farmer Project

The Small Farmer Project is the result of an effort to support Ethiopian producers with a marketplace for farm-traceable coffees. This project is made possible in conjunction with Lulo Coffees, an Ethiopian export and coffee development company dedicated to connecting small producers with buyers. Samples are sent out to potential buyers, price is negotiated on the farmers' behalf, and contracts are only accepted when the producer agrees on a sales price and their name is on the contract for each coffee they sell.

Lulo Coffee

Lulo coffee is co-founded by Q Grader and Q Processing Professional, Mr. Robel Kidane. Currently, Lulo owns mills and farms in Gedeb (Yirgacheffe) and Hambella Guji producing fine specialty Honey, Natural, and Anaerobic Natural coffees. Also, Lulo is working with other mill owners in Sidama, Yirgacheffe, and West Arsi. These mills produce fine washed and natural coffees. In addition, Lulo works with single farmers in Guji, Sidama, Yirgacheffe, and West Arsi. Through this project Lulo works with single farmers who have two hectares of land or more as their consultant/agent in quality control, market connection and facilitating export process. Many farmers in the area with two hectares and above have licenses to process and export their coffee on their own. However, many were having challenges finding a market on their own.

The Lulo Promise currently has over 200 farmers under its program. Among them are farmers who have been finalists or winners of the 2020 and 2021 COE competition. These coffees are single farm coffees with exceptional quality and traceability. Before bringing in a farmer to the project, Mr. Robel meets and visits the farmer/farm to see if the farmer is open to adhere by quality and traceability protocol set by Lulo. Once admitted, Mr. Robel pays a visit to each farmer twice during the harvest to inspect/advice on quality control. 80-88% of the value of the coffee is passed onto the farmer.
